Although Clay was kill , Jax took over as President of SAMCRO while Clay was still alive . When Opie ( Ryan Hurst ) learned that Clay was responsible for Piney ’s destruction , he shot Clay twice in the bureau , so he spent some sentence in the infirmary to regain . While there , Jax threatened Clay with a knife and told him that he would permit him live because they needed him for the IRA bargain , and he also forced him into step down as President . As VP of the club , Jax became the young President of the Sons of Anarchy motorcycle club . However , even though he had read his father ’s manifesto , Jax did n’t take the club on the ripe route .
