Screen Rantchatted with Sean Kanan about his recurrence as an older , more mature Mike Barnes inCobra Kaiseason 5 , what it was like working with Ralph Macchio again and adjoin the Cobra Kai cast , his thought on the karate on the show , whether he ’d return as Mike Barnes for Cobra Kai time of year 6 , and his iconic role as Deacon Sharpe onThe Bold and the BeautifulandThe Young and the Restless .
Sean Kanan Talks Cobra Kai
The Karate Kid Part IIIwas your first Hollywood function . Did you ever suppose that 35 age later , you ’d come back and spiel Mike " Effing " Barnes again ?
Sean Kanan : perfectly not . To be reprising the role that I played 35 old age ago , and that the purpose still has a place in the Karate Kid fandom ’s heart … It was just something that I never imagined . Once I get word that Cobra Kai was pass off , patently , I started thinking , " Wow , this would be an amazing chance . To amount back and reprise the role . Just unbelievable . " You know , there are very few roles that actor do that once they finish them , [ they ] cover to populate on in the minds of the rooter . And I ’m just mortify and blessed and so excited for everyone to see season five .
When did you find out thatCobra Kaiexisted and that Ralph Macchio and William Zabka were continuingThe Karate Kidin a TV serial publication ?
Sean Kanan : I catch up pretty cursorily , before they depart into main picture taking , because it was in the trades . And so I was really mad for them . You know , Billy and Ralph are terrific guys . I ’m so glad for all the winner that they ’re experiencing with this . And , you know , it ’s been a bit of a longsighted journey for me to get to Cobra Kai , but it was certainly deserving the wait .
How were you last contact to unite the show ? And what was your chemical reaction when it in conclusion take place ?
Sean Kanan : I had speak off and on with the creators of the show , and they patently knew that I desire to be a part of it . And I think that probably in June of last year , we scheduled a Zoom meeting was Jon Hurwitz and Josh Heald . Hayden [ Schlossberg ] could make it . And we sat down and talked about the possibility of what it would expect like for Mike to come back .
I could n’t believe that they were willing to listen to my ideas and everything , because it ’s not the norm that the creators of a successful show will sit down with an doer and get their stimulant . We talked for a while , and I allege , " Look , I ’m so emotional to arrive back , I for sure put myself in your highly capable workforce . " And really , the only thing that I had said to them was I really would love it , if possible , that Mike is not this sort of uni - dimensional character that he was in The Karate Kid 3 .
I ’ve evolved a portion as a person , as an actor , and chance are that Mike has evolve too . And I would wish to play the grapheme with a lot more colors and different aspect of his personality . And to their mention , that ’s what I think we were able to do .
I really love the act Mike took and how , as you allege , he really did develop and grow as a someone . You ’ve obviously remain in fight back chassis , and a circle of masses probably do n’t know that you really have belts in karate . Can you talk a picayune bite about your karate experience ?
Sean Kanan : Sure . My soldierly art experience started back when I was about 15 years old . I get school in Shotokan karate , and I ’ve prepare off and on over the age , in various flair , including some Brazilian jiujitsu and Filipino joystick and knife fighting with Darryl Vidal from The Karate Kid .
What ’s interesting is the heading of my soldierlike arts organization , which is call Genbu - Kai , is headed up by sensei Fumio Demura , who was Pat Morita ’s stunt two-fold . And he in reality was very instrumental in my get down the role . And what I analyse , Genbu - Kai karate , is really about as close to what Miyagi - Do is as you could get , which is kind of ironic that playing the villain from Cobra Kai , I really trained in something that ’s very much akin to what Mr. Miyagi teach Daniel .
That ’s really amazing . I just love the parallels in life to how your story turned out in the show . Now , give your karate experience , what ’s your take on the karate on the show , particularly the young hurl who in reality had to read karate ?
Sean Kanan : I believe it ’s fantastic . I am absolutely in awe of the endowment and expertness that everybody on the show demonstrates . You have sex , it ’s a lot of hard workplace , learning the stage dancing , make certain nobody gets hurt . Television moves very quick so , consequently , you do n’t get as much dry run time as you would on a feature article film .
They ’ve start an unbelievable group of stuntmen and choreographer headed up by Don Lee . And , when I run low down there , and they kind of wanted to take a look at what I could do , and they did , they said , " Well , we ’re in fairly good shape here . " And they constructed the choreography , and you know , just had so much fun working on it with Yuji [ Okumoto ] and with Billy . It was just great . It really was .
As a diehardKarate Kidfan , I lost my head when you , Chozen , and Johnny team up up to fight Terry Silver . That ’s a dream . How was that whole thing to shoot , and working with those guys ?
Sean Kanan : Oh my God , it was so much fun . I intend , they ’re great , guys . First of all , just hang out with Billy and Yuji and Ralph on bent is a stack of playfulness . you’re able to forget really quickly that it ’s a job . They ’re great to work with you . It was exciting because it was the first time that Johnny Lawrence and Mike Barnes had ever hail into link . You see these guys initially are butting head , and then very quickly , it kind of evolves into this sort of weird ersatz reciprocal respect into … Could these guys eventually become friend ?
I just love when Johnny says , " The Bad Boy ’s right ! " ( laughter ) That ’s one of the great things about this show ; the strong comedic vibe that it has . And to view Yuji dally a part that ’s got such a warm comedic expression to it is a mass of fun . And it was important for me too . I want to do my good to show a comedic side , in some esteem , of Mike Barnes .
Between you and Ralph , Billy , Yuji , and Thomas [ Ian Griffith ] , who ’s the best fighter ? And if you take yourself out of the equation , if you say you ’re the best , then who among them is the best ?
Sean Kanan : Thomas is a really accomplished martial artist . He really is . He ’s been doing this a recollective time , and he ’s learn . So I think , definitely , the nod goes to Thomas on that one .
And then , after that , I do n’t know . I think Billy and Yuji and I have all studied in depart degrees , you know , with different levels of intensity at dissimilar times in our lifespan . Listen , I ’m 55 years one-time . At this stop in my life , I ’m just happy I can still recoil above my head , [ and ] not wind up draw something and winding up in bed for three Day . So I do n’t know who ’s skillful . I always get ask that , between Barnes and Lawrence , who ’s better , and , I ’ll let the fan decide .
When we foregather Mike Barnes again , he ’s in a totally different berth . A whole surprising station . What ’s your take on his evolution , where he is in biography now ? And I love also that the second after he meets Daniel Russo , the whole affair falls apart .
Sean Kanan : Right , right . Well , I call up that Mike clearly had a really unmanageable time after the All Valley tournament , and [ he ] probably had a real rough period for a while . And as he allege to Daniel , it was his father - in - law who teach him that he could do something else with his hand besides combat , and probably the relationship with his wife really helped turn him around . And he plant something that break him a sense of value , which was induce furniture , and running this furniture depot , and his relationship with his wife and relationship with his Church Father - in - law .
And then I guess , when that ’s all taken away from him by Terry , the replacement gets flipped . And we see that Mike was able-bodied to be this guy cable over here , which was a husband and a business enterprise owner , and kind of upstanding citizen . But once all of those elements of his new sprightliness were taken out of place , he default on to what he knows , which is the hombre ’s a beast , and he ’s ready to rend the head off the ophidian .
Of course , Mike Barnes was a scoundrel in the ' 80s , but he is n’t your only iconic fibre . You ’ve actually played Deacon Sharpe for a muckle longer onThe Bold and the BeautifulandThe Young and the Restless . What ’s your samara to act a great baddie , especially when that go for so long ?
Sean Kanan : I think it ’s a couple of things . First of all , you know , no scoundrel sees themselves as a scoundrel . They see themselves as an individual trying to get what they want with a dot of vista . And so you have to understand what the peak of view is of your reference . I also mean that good people do unsound things , bad people do good things , and that it ’s always interesting to search those nano shades of greyness that exist within all of us . Because very few people , very few thing in life are monolithically this or that , black or white , good or bad . And so , when you see the man in characters that ostensibly would be called a villain , that ’s what makes it interesting .
Fingers are crossed thatCobra Kaiis going to be back for season six . Are you in as Mike Barnes if that happens ?
Sean Kanan : take heed , if they would like me to be in it , just tell me where to pack the futile black … Well , I guess it would n’t be fruitless black gi any longer , would it ? You never jazz , though .
Yeah , sure , I ’d be in it . I had such an amazing time doing it . It was an prodigious experience on so many unlike levels that I would absolutely fuck to be a part of it if they ask .
