Floki was fiercely loyal tothe Norse godsand was the most religious of Ragnar ’s chemical group , so much so that he legitimately distressed about his actions or those of his Viking brothers angering the Gods . Floki often saw a spiritual or spiritual meaning in everything and had vision from the gods , and he was quite intolerant towards those who did n’t share his religion or defied it , leading to his uttermost dislike towards Christians , who he image as untrustworthy and undeserving of mercifulness . With all this in mind , it ’s not that surprising that Floki feel betrayed by his better friend when he expect to be baptized , even if it was part of a much bigger plan .
InVikingsseason 3 , a severely hurt Ragnar secretly meet with the Franks , who offered him Au and silver gray , but as he recognise his end was near , he did n’t accept the offering and rather postulate to be baptized and buried inside the city . When Ragnar died , he was placed into a wooden coffin made by Floki and was escorted to the gates of Paris . Standing over his acquaintance ’s coffin , Floki expressed his disgust of Ragnar ’s baptism and thus his betrayal of the gods , telling him he himself feel stag and that he loved him more than anyone , include Athelstan .
However , this was all part ofan elaborate plan by Ragnar , as when his coffin was convey inside the Cathedral , Ragnar jumped out of it , live , and forced the sentry duty to start the gates , after which the rest of the Vikings acquire over . On their path home , Ragnar told Floki he knew he was the one who kill Athelstan . Now , even though Ragnar ’s opinion and trust fluctuate , it ’s unlikely he run to heaven after he died and , alternatively , he move to Norse hereafter , though whether he entered Valhalla or not is still moot , as he did n’t choke in battle , but the gods were always on his side , and Odin seem to him a couple of times .
Vikings: Why Floki Killed Athelstan In Season 3
Athelstan was an Anglo - Saxon Christian monkwho was taken as a slave by Ragnar after the Lindisfarne maraud inVikingsseason 1 . Athelstan ended up becoming very close to Ragnar and his fellowship , to the point where he deal his religious beliefs with Ragnar and became pull between Viking and Christian beliefs . The strong adhesion between Ragnar and Athelstan made Floki very overjealous and also angry , and in season 3 , Floki had a vision he interpreted as a signal that “ blood must be spilled ” , so he killed Athelstan with an ax while he was praying . Floki ’s fanaticism , fixation with his near friends , and heartache extend him to kill Athelstan , but his relationship with Ragnar did n’t get better after that .
